Marko Markov escapes tunnel vision thanks to ancient cultures

by WIM VAN DER BEEK - curator - ART IMAGE Marko Markov is a true expressionist. He expresses his passion and enthusiasm in raw images that bear the characteristics and traces of archetypal archaeological finds. Fragments of bodies, heads, ornaments, symbols with ritual meanings and ancient architecture appear as rudimentary remains. They are tarnished and damaged, as if they were fragmentary overlays. Battered faces emerge from chunks of primordial matter, and some images are pierced with holes.

All these artistic interventions reinforce the suggestion that this is art with a long history. In addition, the mystical appearance and experience are also enhanced, while the visual tension gains strength through the imaginary damage and the combination of polished and rough parts. The images of Markov largely contain Bulgarian history, but at the same time they are timeless and universal. They can be understood and "understood" even without knowledge of Bulgarian history.

The latter has everything to do with the visual language that, in a sense, is of all times and of all cultures. Everywhere in the world, archaeological finds bear the traces of transience and tell the story of heroic struggle and tragic downfall. With his images, Markov thus reaches beyond the boundaries of Bulgaria's ''own'' history. He has mainly succeeded in this thanks to the strong focus on philosophical and spiritual points of departure.

With his images, the artist zooms into religious values and spiritual experiences that transcend the limitations of specific religions and are lifted to a higher meditative and contemplative level.

The cultures of Celts, Sioux, Incas, Shamans and other primitive tribes or civilizations that have perished are touched, so to speak.

By seeking to connect with the origins of all cultures and the primal experience of authentic tribes, Markov has succeeded in escaping the urgent tunnel vision that, according to him, affects many contemporary artists.
